His Patience with His Patients
Why do “a lot of patients request” transportation provider Francisco Flores, according to his supervisor, Leslie? Why do his two main patients call not to ask “Where’s my ride?” but to say “I want you to know I just got dropped off by Francisco Flores, he really helps me out, and I just wanted to give him a good review”?
The answer is actually pretty simple: Patients love Francisco because he’s so caring, thoughtful, and thorough when he transports them, taking extra time and putting in extra effort. Leslie relays, for example, how he “carries everything” for the patients who have bags to take in and out of their appointments; how he gently helps those feeling weaker, some of whom are undergoing dialysis, in and out of the car, and makes sure they’re in the lobby seated comfortably before they’re called in. “They really appreciate that,” she says.
Lunch-worthy?
We know why they love Francisco. But how did regular-guy Francisco become super-conscientious and considerate Francisco?
Maybe it started in his native country, El Salvador, where Francisco was “the one who always watched out for his parents,” says Leslie. It certainly grew through his ongoing observations that people in his community there didn’t, and don’t, have the benefit of non-emergency medical transportation providers—like Francisco—to help them get to their medical appointments, as they do in this country. According to Leslie, Francisco has seen how that struggle for transportation affects people, and the way he does his job is, in large part, his way of trying to make up for some of that—adding a kind of balance to the healthcare universe.
In fact, she says with a chuckle, she’s been told, “You know, you should buy him lunch sometime. He does a great job.” When asked what she’d like people to know about Francisco, Leslie doesn’t hesitate. “His patience with his patients,” she says loudly.
A Hero
For making sure that every patient within your reach gets the healthcare transportation they need with an extra dose of kindness and comfort, and is treated with the dignity, respect, and caring they deserve, thank you, Francisco Flores. You are a Hero.
